1. General information
There is no doubt that periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. Some epidemiology studies consider it the second most common disease in the population. Hence the importance of this subject within the global field of dentistry and health in general, since it is related to other pathologies such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, pregnancy...
The subject of Periodontics should enable the student to diagnose and treat periodontal diseases, as well as to promote the development of preventive attitudes of such diseases.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 ( in such a way that the acquisition of the https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement: Goal 3: Health and Wellness.
Recommendations for taking the subject
To take this subject it is necessary to have previously passed course 29327 Periodontics I
2. Learning results
1) Identify the symptoms reported by the patient as well as the signs (by means of clinical examination and complementary tests), typical of periodontal pathology and peri-implant tissues.
2) Perform a correct diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan of the patient with a level similar to the one worked on in the class.
3) Know how to distinguish all those situations that, due to their complexity, cannot be treated by the student, justifying why, and to know how to refer them to the corresponding specialist.
4) Perform the basic phase of periodontal treatment as well as the maintenance phase at a basic level.
5) Know how to adequately assess the patient's conditions (e.g. age, socio-cultural level, medical risks, etc.) in relation to the proposed treatment in order to meet the patient's expectations.
6) Know how to plan a work session in the dental office according to the functions that belong to each type of professional (dentist, clinical assistant, administrative assistant).
7) Establish the therapeutic sequence in the case that a multidisciplinary treatment is required and know how to elaborate an interconsultation document in order to obtain the necessary information to carry out the indicated treatment
8) Perform and know the surgical phases of periodontal treatment in patients and its correct maintenance.
The learning results obtained in the subject are important because they contribute in a fundamental way to achieve the knowledge and skills necessary for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases and to let the patient know the appropriate treatment for each case.. Along with this, it will allow the student to carry out the basic treatment of periodontal diseases, which is considered fundamental in the degree of Dentistry, as expressed in the Degree Project.

UNIT 9: GINGIVECTOMY-GINGIVOPLASTY
UNIT 10: RESECTIVE TECHNIQUES
UNIT 11: ALTERED PASSIVE ERUPTION.
UNIT 12: GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION.
UNIT 13: MUCOGINGIVAL SURGERY.
PRACTICAL SESSIONS:
WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE DENTAL PRACTICE SERVICE OF THE FACULTY FOLLOWING THE PROTOCOL DEVELOPED AND LEARNED THROUGHOUT THE SUBJECT
4. Academic activities
The learning process designed for this subject is based on the following:
EXPLANATORY SESSIONS.
CLINICAL SESSIONS or CASE METHOD.
DIGITAL RING.
CLINICAL PRACTICES.
The learning activities that have been programmed for this subject are:
1- Explanatory sessions: the theoretical concepts of the subject will be developed.
2- Clinical sessions or case method: The teacher will present clinical cases related to the subject, as well as clinical cases that the students are developing in the practices of the subject.
3- Digital ring/digital media
4- Clinical practices: They will be developed in the Dental Practice Service and in the preclinical laboratories.
The planning of the activities and the dates for the delivery of the work will be communicated to the student in due time.
5. Assessment system
In general, in accordance with Royal Decree 1125/2003, the evaluation will be carried out continuously throughout the semester by means of:
* Objective knowledge test. It is a written exam that will consist of a clinical case type question to be developed that may contain one or more sections. It will be necessary to obtain 6 points (out of a possible 10) to pass, bearing in mind that both the theoretical content and the forms of expression of the topics (syntactic and orthographic expression of the writing) will be evaluated. This objective test will contribute 50% of the final grade.
* Clinical practices. Skills in the diagnosis, planning and execution of the treatments performed on patients in the Dental Practice Service will be evaluated , as well as the development of the transversal competences described. The evaluation of this part will be carried out by means of a rubric. This activity of evaluation will contribute 50% to the final grade and is passed with a 5 out of 10.
If the clinical practice could not be correctly evaluated due to the absence of patients or lack of treatments performed on patients, this part of the subject would be evaluated through oral exams where cases or assumptions will be presented in which the student must demonstrate that they understands the topics taught. i.e. that they knows how to diagnose a periodontal patient, carry out a correct treatment plan and a correct prognosis of the proposed treatment.
Requirements to pass the subject:
- It will be necessary to have passed all parts of the subject-
- Failure to attend practices without justification will make it impossible to pass this part of the subject and therefore the whole subject.
- Repeated unpunctuality to practical sessions may be considered as a failure to attend them and will mean an impossibility to pass this part of the subject and, therefore, the whole subject.
- Failure to comply with the rules of behaviour and/or decorum in the university clinic in the treatment of patients, auxiliary personnel, colleagues or faculty may result in failure of the practical part of the subject and therefore the whole subject.
